Are you aware how moving scams take place? If you are planning to hire a moving company, you must know the warning signs of a scam to prevent yourself from being their next victim. Competition among moving companies in this industry is highly competitive, which raises the need for absolute watchfulness. The followings are some warning flags of scamming moving companies and how you can avoid them.
• Moving quotes based on cubic foot not by weight. The moment you notice this type of bid, immediately get rid of the company. Charges based on weight can be computed accurately as you would be provided with a proof of weight. On the other hand, computation based cubic foot would not give you a reliable proof of the charges made. In August 2005, fees computed by cubic feet are made illegal in interstate moves as it had become the most common form of scam.
• Sudden increase in moving costs right after packing and loading your goods in their delivery truck. To avoid this problem, lay everything agreed upon in a formal, written contract. This way, they would not be able to force excessive charges not reflected on the contract.
• Untimely arrival of shipment. Too long delay is also a red flag of moving scam. Dependable moving services are capable of delivering of your goods within the timeframe reflected on the contract. You can allow certain adjustments to make room for bad weather conditions and other justifiable reasons but it should also be logical enough. However, in this type of situation, the only thing you can do is to report them to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration which oversees the moving industry.
